Maltodextrin

Matco's Maltodextrins are neutral, easily dispersible carbohydrate powders made from rice and tapioca starch, available in conventional, certified organic and infant grades. They are gluten-free, non-GMO, vegan and hypoallergenic, with low sweetness and a clean, bland profile.

Maltodextrin is a functional ingredient rather than a sweetener. It carries flavors, colors and oils, builds body and mouthfeel, bulks out low-sugar formulations, prevents caking in dry blends and dissolves quickly in cold or hot water. Its blandness is the point: it delivers all of that without touching the flavor of the finished product.

Frequently Asked Questions

A carbohydrate powder made by partially breaking down starch with enzymes. The result sits between starch and sugar: it dissolves easily like a sugar but tastes almost neutral, which is why it is used as a carrier, bulking agent and texture builder rather than a sweetener.
Ours is made from rice and tapioca starch. Most maltodextrin on the world market is made from corn or wheat, which is why buyers with gluten-free, non-GMO or corn-free requirements look for rice and tapioca versions specifically.
Not in the labelling sense. It is a polysaccharide, so most jurisdictions do not count it as sugar on the nutrition panel, though it is a digestible carbohydrate that contributes the same calories per gram. Check your market's labelling rules for the declaration that applies.
Rice and tapioca maltodextrin are naturally gluten-free, and ours are produced as gluten-free ingredients. Wheat-derived maltodextrin exists in some markets, which is why the source is worth specifying in a gluten-free formulation.
Both come from starch, but dextrose is fully converted to glucose, so it is sweet and highly soluble. Maltodextrin is only partially converted, leaving longer carbohydrate chains, so it is barely sweet and works as a carrier, bulking and texture ingredient instead.
DE (dextrose equivalent) measures how far the starch has been broken down. Lower DE maltodextrins are less sweet, less soluble and better at building body; higher DE grades dissolve faster and carry a little more sweetness. Anything above 20 DE is classed as a syrup solid or glucose solid rather than a maltodextrin.
Yes. Rice and tapioca maltodextrin are available certified organic with transaction certificates, and both are produced in dedicated infant grades tested lot by lot against stricter limits.
