Tapioca Maltodextrin

Matco's tapioca Maltodextrin is a neutral, easily dispersible carbohydrate powder made from tapioca starch, available in conventional, certified organic and infant grades. It is gluten-free, non-GMO, vegan and hypoallergenic, with low sweetness and a clean, bland profile.

It is a functional ingredient rather than a sweetener. Tapioca maltodextrin carries flavors, colors and oils, builds body and mouthfeel, bulks out reduced-sugar and reduced-fat formulations, keeps dry blends free-flowing and dissolves cleanly in cold or hot systems. Of all the maltodextrin sources, tapioca is the most completely neutral, which is why it is the pick for delicate flavor systems and light-colored products.

Tapioca Maltodextrin Product Range

All grades are produced across a range of DE levels. Lower DE grades are less sweet and better at building body; higher DE grades dissolve faster and carry a little more sweetness. Tell us the application and we will recommend a DE and send a sample.

Frequently Asked Questions

A carbohydrate powder made by partially breaking down tapioca starch with enzymes. The result sits between starch and sugar: it dissolves easily like a sugar but tastes almost neutral, which is why it is used as a carrier, bulking agent and texture builder rather than a sweetener.
Cassava root. The starch is extracted from cassava, then converted by natural enzymes and dried into a fine, free-flowing powder. The plant is cassava; the refined starch and its derivatives are tapioca.
Mostly as a carrier, bulking agent and texture builder. It carries flavors and oils in spray-dried powders, provides fast-absorbing carbohydrate in sports and clinical nutrition, replaces bulk in reduced-sugar and reduced-fat products, and keeps instant powders dispersing cleanly.
Neutrality and allergen clearance. Tapioca contributes no taste or color at all, which protects delicate flavor systems, and it is free of gluten, soy, dairy, corn and rice, so it clears more labels than most alternatives. It is also the natural choice when a formulation needs a non-rice base.
Not in the labelling sense. It is a polysaccharide, so most jurisdictions do not count it as sugar on the nutrition panel, though it is a digestible carbohydrate that contributes the same calories per gram. Check your market's labelling rules for the declaration that applies.
Yes. Cassava contains no gluten, and our tapioca maltodextrin is produced as a gluten-free ingredient, vegan and hypoallergenic.
DE (dextrose equivalent) measures how far the starch has been broken down. Lower DE grades are less sweet, less soluble and better at building body; higher DE grades dissolve faster and carry slightly more sweetness. Anything above 20 DE is classed as a syrup solid rather than a maltodextrin.
Both are dried tapioca-based carbohydrate powders, but syrup solids are converted further, so they are noticeably sweeter and behave as a sweetener. Maltodextrin stops short of that, staying bland and functional.
Stored sealed in original packaging in a cool, dry place away from strong odors, it typically keeps 24 months. As a low-moisture powder it is microbiologically stable; the main risk in storage is moisture pickup, which causes caking.
Yes. Sample quantities are available for lab evaluation with the technical data sheet before any commercial commitment, and we can sample more than one DE level so you can compare in your own system.
